CHEYENNE -- A new Denny's restaurant will open July 5 at the Flying J Travel Plaza, 2250 Etchepare Drive.
Denny's will convert the existing Cookery Pepperoni's restaurant at Flying J. The new Denny's restaurant will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The 166-seat restaurant will be remodeled with new booths and tables, said Chad Collins, a Denny's company business leader.
Flying J is near the West College Drive interchange off of Interstate 25. The business sells fuel, food and merchandise and is part of a national network of full-service travel plazas and fuel stops.
Denny's entered a partnership with Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers, Collins said.
Denny's was selected to be the full-service restaurant operator in about 140 Flying J Travel Centers across the country. The Cheyenne restaurant site is the fifth in the nation to be converted into a Denny's, Collins said.
Denny's started in 1953 and is a product people consistently can count on, Collins said. "It makes sense to partner the Denny's brand with a travel center," he said.
Denny's expects to hire about 100 to 110 employees, Collins said. Current employees at the Cookery and people from outside can apply.
The Cheyenne Workforce Center hosted hiring interviews earlier this week.
More than 200 people were interviewed in three days, Collins said. He expects between 800 and 1,000 people will be interviewed before the hiring process is complete.
"Workforce has been an amazing partner," he said of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, which runs the Cheyenne Workforce Center.
More interviews are planned over the next three weeks, said Catherine Redlich, workforce specialist at the center. Denny's is looking for cooks, servers, service assistants and hosts or hostesses.
Salaries will vary, depending on the position. Pay for assistants and servers likely will be closer to minimum wage. Cooks will start out at $9 an hour, based on a news release from the Department of Workforce Services.
Those interested in applying can go to the workforce center, 1510 E. Pershing Blvd., to fill out an application and set up an interview time. The phone number is 777-3700.
They also can register online at www.wyomingatwork.com.
The opening of a new Denny's is "great for the people of Cheyenne, who haven't had a Denny's for almost a decade," Collins said. A Denny's once was located in Cheyenne on West Lincolnway.
The Flying J location also is great for travelers, Collins said.
