| Chef bids to put success on the menu Posted: 15 Jun 2010 04:03 PM PDT Richard Sim, who has Zecca in Amble and is also executive chef at the Baltic's prestigious Six restaurant in Gateshead, has made it through to the quarter-finals of Fusion, a cookery and cocktail competition with a difference. He is among eight le ading chefs and mixologists who have been paired up in an FA Cup-style draw which took place at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel, who now go on to compete in four heats where the winners will advance to two semi-finals and then on to the grand finale.The dynamic duos will work together in pairs to create the perfect fusion of food and drink. Richard has been teamed up with Jo Bing of the Living Room and the pair will compete against Tek Harrington of Malmaison and Euan Halliday of Popolos on Thursday, July 22. "It's very exciting and quite a different type of competition," said Richard. "It's also quite difficult because instead of having to produce a single competition dish, we have to produce three different menus and cook for well over 100 diners on the night and that takes quite a bit of planning." Among the dishes on Richard's menu is a trio of beetroot with goat's cheese, a warm lobster salad and his own take on the classic chocolate cake. Rachel McManus, of leading events company Pzazz Events, along with John Collingwood of Want to Impress, who is a veteran cocktail expert, are the brains behind the competition. "This is a unique and innovative event that we are looking to roll out nationwide following it's launch in the North East," said Rachel, who is excited to be showcasing local talent along with using the North East as a launch platform for what she expects to be a hugely successful nationwide food and drink event. "There is no other competition that brings together the complimentary crafts of cookery and mixology so we are expecting some amazing creations for our guests to pass judgement on!" Week one of the competition will begin on July 16 to 22, followed by the semi-finals on July 28 and 29 and the grand finale on July 30, all taking place at the Gosforth Marriott.
