Budding masterchefs wow the judges in cookery competition Posted: 08 Oct 2010 06:38 AM PDT Budding masterchefs from Chipping Sodbury School wow the judges2:30pm Friday 8th October 2010 THE next Gordon Ramsey and Heston Blumenthal may have been discovered at Chipping Sodbury School. Two aspiring chefs wowed judges with delectable dishes during the school's own Masterchef competition. Sixteen-year-old Robbie Quested and 14-year-old Tom Blackmore were chosen from five finalists in a cook-off at the school. Each had to create a two-course menu with just a £5 budget, funded by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club. Robbie cooked Hunter's stew using venison from the Badminton Estate served with champ and wild elderberry sauce. His dessert was a parfait of autumn fruits and mascarpone. Tom impressed with a chicken and mushroom risotto with seasonal vegetables and a heavenly vanilla cheesecake with blackberry coulis. Rotary club member and local hotelier Mark Lloyd and headteacher Phil Lidstone turned food critics for the day to judge the dishes. Said Mark: "Rather than a winner and runner-up we chose two winners as it was too difficult to separate them. They created their dishes from local produce and have won a day behind the scenes with the executive chef at Hotel du Vin in Bristol. "We hope to arrange an inter-schools competition in the future and put the winners forward to Rotary's national competition." The other finalists were Gemma Rallison, 14, who cooked herb-crusted lamb with a mint drizzle and dauphinoise potatoes, Caroline Mayo, 14, who made mushroom parcels with minted potatoes, baby leaf herb salad and baked vine tomatoes, and Declan Hiller, 15, who served traditional British rack of lamb, with fine beans, carrots, crushed potatoes, swede, carrot and roasted shallots.
