Back in trim: Margaret Hunt, 66, from Warwick Road Carlisle. has lost three stone in 12 months on the Slimming World programme and can now fit into her daughter's dresses

Margaret Hunt, 66, of Warwick Road, became depressed when her teaching career and work as an educational support officer at Carlisle College came to an end.

She said: "I battled bowel cancer 10 years ago and had radiotherapy.

"Ten years on and a recent scan showed I am doing okay which is great news.

"Unfortunately, when I reached 65 I was required to retire from my job but I still felt I had more to give. I was working at the college at the time.

"I wanted to do something. I missed my job, my colleagues and having people around me.

"I was tired, fed up and uncomfortable."

Mrs Hunt, who is a mum of three grown-up children, says she started to put on weight because she was feeling depressed.

"Negativity kicked in and I began to comfort eat and put on weight. I was cross with my lack of self-control. I'd had yo-yo weight for most of my adult life but when I reached an all-time high I decided I had to do something about it."

Mrs Hunt, who taught a range of subjects from maths to cookery at Trinity School, joined a Slimming World class at St Aidan's Church.

She said: "A Slimming World leaflet dropped though my door and I decided to do something about it – I went to the meetings and then decided to train as a consultant.

"There's been a lot of meetings, residential courses and exams but I've enjoyed every minute of it."

Mrs Hunt has gone from being 15st 12lb at her heaviest to 12st 11½lb at the latest weigh-in this week.

She said: "I've lost weight literally by eating loads – but lots of the right stuff."

Her diet now includes lots of fruit, vegetables, lean meat and chicken – with the occasional treat.

Mrs Hunt's slimming classes start on Monday in Yewdale Community Centre at 7pm.
