Firefighters launch exercise classes to stop homeowners becoming too fat Posted: 26 Sep 2010 11:28 PM PDT Coventry fire stations are now launching a string of healthy, family-friendly activities, ranging from exercise groups to cookery classes. They will tackle obesity, alcoholism and smoking in the hope it reduces the number of house fires in Coventry each year. Simon Shilton, fire service operations commander for Coventry said: "Often, health related issues like smoking or using chip pans to cook greasy, fatty food contribute to the fires we have to fight. "Obesity is a problem too - we've had to rescue people who couldn't respond fast enough to a fire in another room or got trapped because they couldn?t get downstairs quick enough." He believes solving these health problems would mean fewer people would need to be rescued and courageous firefighters would not have to put their lives on the line as often.
