After 'Kitchen Champion' on Colors, Bollywood 'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar is all set to act as judge in 'Master Chef India', a cookery show on Star Plus designed to test the culinary skills of the common people.

Scheduled to go on air on weekends at prime time from October 16, the show will witness Akshay don the hat as a judge, along with renowned chefs Kunal Kapoor and Ajay Chopra, to select a 'Master chef' from among 12 'amateur chefs' competing among themselves for the title.

The 12 contestants will be tested in their ability to display their culinary skills in the face of extreme pressure situations like catering to a real big fat Indian wedding in record time, or whipping up a recipe under extreme conditions or catering to a langar.

Sources in the channel say that the show is designed as a unique platform to acknowledge and encourage the culinary skills of passionate cooks and groom them to become the ultimate professionals of the art by making ordinary people to pass the litmus test in not only cooking new recipes, but also managing extreme situations.

From cooking for huge crowds with minimum equipment to whipping up recipes at a moment's notice, it will pose every cooking challenge within one's imagination! The contender who will able to stand strong with his/her will and talent, through the mounting pressure each week, will be adjudged as India's first ever - 'MasterChef'.

The the show is inspired by the popular international cookery show 'Master Chef' that has shattered records in the UK and Australia.

On the airing of the show on Star Plus, Mr Anupam Vasudev, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Star India, said, ''after pioneering successful concepts in reality shows like 'Aap Ki Kachehri' and 'Sach Ka Saamna', the channel is now ready to present 'MasterChef India'. With this show, we once again bring a completely new dimension to this genre on Indian television.

International versions of 'MasterChef' have gained a huge fan following in two of the world's biggest markets - UK and Australia.

Hence bringing the format to a country like India, where diverse cuisines exist, was only a natural choice. With Superstar Akshay Kumar at the fore and larger-than-life cooking challenges we hope to unearth the best talent in the country with this show.'' On his new role as the judge of the show, Akshay said, ''I am very happy to be returning to my roots after so many years. My two favourites - 'Cooking and Camera/Entertainment' are coming together and I am excited to be a part of it. I have been following the international version of MasterChef regularly and I am glad that the channel is bringing this great and interesting challenge to the Indian audience.'' 'Master Chef India' comes close on the heels of 'Kitchen Champion' on Colors, three editions of which have witnessed common men and women as well as celebrities from the world of television battle among themselves for the title.
