Rose West writes prison cook book, reports

MURDERESS Rose West is reported to be writing a cookery book for fellow inmates at her North-East jail.

The 56-year-old, who is serving life for her role in the notorious Cromwell Street murders, is currently in Low Newton Women's Prison at Brasside on the outskirts of Durham City.

And in her cell there, according to national newspaper reports, she is compiling recipes of the sorts of dishes that prisoners could prepare using the ingredients available to them behind bars.

West has been described as "playing a mother hen role'' to younger inmates and is said to have embarked on the book after being praised for her "homely'' culinary advice.

Among the recipes she has allegedly prepared are shepherd's pie, steak and kidney pudding and Victoria sponge.

West was found guilty of the joint murders of ten young women, including her own daughter, in 1885. Her husband Fred hanged himself in jail while on remand before his trial.

Many of the killings took place at the couple's home in Cromwell Street, Gloucester, which has since been demolished.

Recent reports maintain that West has put on weight, which she is now trying to lose with help from a personal trainer, and is using a treadmill and step machine.

She is also said to like making her own clothes, but was allegedly banned from using a sewing machine in her cell for health and safety reasons.

West was moved to Low Newton in 2008from Bronzefield Prison, South London, apparently after an inmate plot to attack her was discovered by staff.

At the jail she had been described as one of the 35 most well-behaved prisoners and granted various privileges.

A spokeswoman for the Prison Service told The Northern Echo: "We don't comment on individual prisoners".
